Differences between classic and modern list view

In SharePoint on premise you don’t have the modern list experience (yet). Luckily, this is bound to change with SharePoint 2019. In SharePoint Online however, switching between the classic and modern list experience is as easy as changing one setting. That is, if you or your administrator has given you the rights to do so. In this blog I’ll be showing the differences between the classic and modern list view.

Setting up the modern (new) list experience

First things first, if the modern list experience hasn’t been activated yet here’s how to set up this new experience. It’s as easy as this: go to the list settings, click on advanced settings, scroll to the bottom section list experience and check New experience.

Difference in view

The most obvious change between the classic and modern experience is the way the list view looks. Let’s take a look at both experiences.

Difference in options

Both the classic as the modern experience have some options that the other one doesn’t have. A list of features that is available only in the classic or the modern experience can be found on the official Microsoft Office Support-site, right here.

One thing that is important in particular is that in the you cannot add more web parts in the modern experience view. This is not limited to the list view itself however. It also is not possible in the item view, meaning you cannot edit the pages to view, add and edit items (dispform.aspx, newform.aspx, editform.aspx).
